“Framing nature is not art”, -Glynn Williams.
Nature is beautiful. For it to become art, I believe, there needs to be a process of transformation.
What does it take to heal when we are broken?
To find a way out of darkness.
To find our way out of the woods when we feel lost?
I have been drawn to nature and it’s incredible beauty since I could walk. I am moved by stones, wood and leaves, in their abundance of repetition and perfection. Something no matter how skilled I become, I find impossible to emulate. In this exhibition I will allow nature to enter my space and work - inform and direct me. Nature, just like art has the ability to move us, to inspire, guide, and inform us.
Part of the new body of work that I will show is based on the song “Into the Woods”, by Fay Wilhagen. Eighteen sentences that I feel sum up what it feels like to get consumed by darkness and loss and the journey it takes find to hope. For thirteen years I have worked with, and been inspired by, dancer Maiko Nishino. For the past year I have been working with her in her studio. Into the Woods has been played as she has danced and I have drawn.
My desire to create this new work comes from a place of gratitude. When everything fails or hurts, the process of transformation continues miraculously to transgress the darkness. I am not necessarily completely Out Of the Woods yet, but I do believe that we all can find a way out - and a way home.
As all bronze work is cast in Edinburgh, make note that a normal time for delivery of a small bronze sculpture is 2-3 months. With the exception of work that is available from the artist studio, which can be shipped within a few days.
